AlphaSpermÒ Nutritional Supplement Has Major Impacts on Sperm Health
Nine Month Study Shows Impressive Epigenetic Changes to Sperm DNA
Denver, CO – October 22, 2024 – A study of a men’s nutritional supplement finds major changes to the epigenetic marks on sperm DNA, according to a study presented at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. This breakthrough finding is based on recent research revealing a strong correlation of sperm epigenetic patterns and male fertility potential.
Until now, the field of male pre-conception supplements has been in a quandary: Studies examining semen analyses are conflicted regarding improvement, but those looking at pregnancy rates have demonstrated favorable outcomes. This suggests that supplements may enhance male infertility through less obvious ways than by altering sperm counts or sperm movement. This new research points to a much more subtle molecular mechanism that might be at work to improve male fertility with supplement use: alterations in sperm epigenetics, a process whereby DNA gene expression patterns are influenced by diet, lifestyle and other environmental factors. “Epigenetics makes your nose a nose and your ear an ear despite the fact that these cells contain the exact same DNA library” says the study senior author, Dr. Timothy Jenkins of Brigham Young University. “And epigenetic DNA modulation is constantly in motion throughout life,” he adds.
In a collaborative academic and industry study involving Brigham Young University, Renew Biotechnologies, Path Fertility, Inc from Utah and The Turek Clinic in Beverly Hills, CA, 31 men divided into 3 different cohorts by age and infertility status were given 9 months of nutritional supplements supplied by AlphaSpermÒ of San Francisco, CA. Changes to sperm epigenetic patterns were assessed at baseline and after 9 months of supplementation using the Illumina 450K methylome array. Overall, over 7000 gene regions were significantly altered by AlphaSpermÒ therapy. In addition, the epigenetic changes consisted almost exclusively of increased methylation (hypermethylation) of those gene regions. When the associated gene pathways were analyzed, it was found that 43 biological processes were significantly altered with therapy, including DNA replication, stem cell differentiation, mitochondrial translation and remodeling, protein targeting, ubiquitin regulation and chromatin remodeling and silencing.
“Such massive changes to the sperm epigenome and gene expression patterns have never before been demonstrated with nutritional supplements,” says Paul Turek MD, a study author. Although the fertility of men was not examined in the study, the importance of the sperm epigenome to embryo development and male fertility potential is well-recognized and undisputed. He adds, “Although a perfect diet is probably the ultimate treatment for male infertility due to disrupted sperm epigenetics, well designed nutritional supplements should now be considered as well.”
