To Moms and Moms To Be
I want to thank mothers. All mothers. New, old, prospective and, of course, my own mother and also my lovely wife.
As a fertility doctor, I am continually charmed by every thank you note and call from new Moms and Dads, many arriving on the coattails of some fairly intense treatments for male infertility. Much of what we do involves incredible stamina, effort and resources from couples and demands high-level expertise on our parts. But in the end, the result is quite simple: a pregnancy and a birth. Although technically and medically challenging, philosophically it boils down to making babies that are born by the hand of God and the hand of man, with a little more man than usual.
So, the first reason I thank mothers is for allowing me to help them achieve their goals in life.
But there is another reason to thank mothers. Mothers are nurturing souls who help men live longer. That’s right, it is the women in men’s lives who are reading the owner’s manual. And of course, and of no surprise, is the fact that married or cohabiting men end up living longer than single men. Honore de Balzac hit the nail on the head when he said: “A woman knows the face of the man she loves as a sailor knows the open sea.”
So, the second reason I thank mothers is for taking great care of our men.
